To Crazy and Back Again….
I think of them all…in all their legendary greatness…Carroll, Hemingway, Austen, Shakespeare, Poe, Dali, Michelangeo, Davinci, Hendrix…and I could go on and on…
Anyone who had anything to do with art… who knew how to detach themselves from reality and make a trip to the beyond.. but, the talent came from the return. The ability to walk the line between sane and insane, to sometimes fall over into insane…swim in it for a while, ponder it, study it…and bring some of it back to the world of the sane, to be studied and admired by all.
These people are rare, and as you can see from the short list above, many make the trip over and do not return. But all of us try. We try to be true to our talents, using the countless legends as both an inspiration and as a caution.
For those of us who know our insatiable appetite to express our talent, this hunger grows and grows until it must be expressed or be lost forever to the graveyards of the mind, replaced as quickly as the winds shifts or as next thought enters the mind. So we strive, to be true to ourselves, to the world of the sane, and the insane… there are many out there who will never know how difficult it is to exist between two worlds, but can only appreciate what we bring back to show them in the form of art, poetry, music, stories, and much more.
This is okay by me, I’m willing to accept the burden that few will understand, but those few keep me daring enough to step across the line and out of the world of the sane, to venture to the world of the insane and bring back something wonderful to share, ponder, surprise, inspire, and create again and again.
To crazy and back again. The life of an artist. Ask yourself, what have you brought back lately?
