Coming Out of the Twilight Closet…

So I’ll tell you now, I have NO idea how it happened.

I remember standing at the back of Barnes & Noble, ashamed of what I held in my hand. You’d think it was porn or something. I had my story all ready to go in case someone asked: “Yeah, uh, I’m buying this for research”, or “Yeah, my neice loves it, it’s a gift”. But as luck would have it, no one batted an eye. I waited until the registers were empty, and ventured up to the cashier, trying my best to seem as nonchalant as possible, but feeling naked to the world at that moment. I handed her the incriminating evidence, and waited for the excited chatter to follow. But nothing, she checked me out and i was on my way without a word. So The hard part was over, I had made it out of the bookstore with a copy of Twilight.

But oh no, it was just beginning.

Over the next 12 days, despite the great ridicule from my husband, I managed to finish all four books, and by the last one, I no longer cared about what people thought of me as I buried my nose in the story every chance I got, public or private. I thought the story itself fleeting, though I loved the occasional awkward, pop-up humor. I hated the weak, desperate Bella, but liked the good guy vampire Edward for what it was worth. (Although the “sparkly skin” crap irritates me.) But what REALLY impressed me was Jacob Black. I longed to learn more and see where his story went. So it was no surprise when I ended up in line to see New Moon.

And somewhere in the world, a pig has learned to fly and hell must be at least partially frozen over, because Holy crap, it was GREAT! I enjoyed just about every second, (except the part of seeing the pale, pasty nipple-hair on Robert Pattinson, wtf?) and I can only hope Chis Weitz will be in charge of everything that has to do with this story going forward. The effects were amazing, the characters had depth and style to them, and even though I can’t stand Bella, I found myself putting up with her more willingly, and even identifying with some (though very few) feelings she had throughout the movie. It was hip, it was stylish, and I walked out of the theater with my head up, no longer afraid to admit I was a Twilight fan.

Even though I despised the 4th and final book, if Chris Weitz is doing the movie, I’ll be there. Premiere day. And I won’t wear a disguise, I promise.

Way to go, New Moon, I can’t wait til we meet again!

Now, no longer just a closet Twilight fan, I’m off to proudly re-read the series.
